Eagles Fly Past Bees 5-1

January 14, 2005 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release

Hidalgo, Tx - Ryan Tobler's pair of power play goals led the Colorado Eagles to a 5-1 washing of the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Friday night at the Dodge Arena. The loss for the Bees places their all-time record to 0-6-0 against Northwest Division squads.

The first period was a lot closer than the score indicated with the Eagles opening the contest with a 2-0 lead. The puck was tied up in the face off circle and once the Bees defensemen left the slot to help dislodge the puck from the scrum, Karlis Zirnis of Colorado popped out and skated in front and muscled the puck past Jeff Levy off his own rebound. The goal was Zirnis' fifth of the season and it came 5:48 into the contest. Northern Conference All-Star MVP Greg Pankewicz, fresh off his nine-point all-star game performance, launched a shot from the point that was redirected by Ryan Tobler for a power play goal with 6:42 remaining to give the Eagles the 2-0 lead. The shots on goal after the first period was 10-10, with Colorado's Tyler Weiman stopping all 10 Bees shots.

Bees enforcer Ryan Shmyr tried to add a spark to the team at the start of the second period, as he squared off with Jesse Cook and pounded him to the ice two seconds into the period. The fight unfortunately did not spark the Bees for long, as Colorado's high potent offensive attacked early in the second period with a goal by Matt Desrosiers 2:20 into the second period. Ryan Tobbler added his second goal of the game 3:30 later with another power play goal. Pankewicz made it 5-0 with a blast from the left circle that soared past Levy.

It was too little too late in the third period, as the Bees finally got on the board 9:25 into the period with Bill Newson tucking a loose puck past Weiman. The goal ended Tyler Weiman's series shutout sequence against the Bees at 134:37, which is the second longest shutout sequence for an opposing goaltender of the Bees in franchise history. Newson's spark would be the only highlight for the Bees, as they were unable to place any more shots past Weiman.

The win gives Colorado a series sweep (3-0-0) over the Bees and they are 4-0-0 all-time against the Bees. The Bees continue their three-in-three weekend with a home-and-home set with the Austin Ice Bats beginning Saturday night in Austin.
