P-Bruins Defeat Whale 2-1 in a Shootout

Hartford, CT - The Providence Bruins defeated the Connecticut Whale 2-1 Saturday evening in a shootout at the XL Center. The P-Bruins got their goal in regulation from Jamie Tardif and their goals in the shootout from Jamie Arniel and Josh Hennessy. The P-Bruins are back at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday for Thundersticks Day at 4:05 p.m. against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
The Whale took a 1-0 lead at the 5:57 mark of the opening period. Kris Newbury tallied his ninth goal of the season, while Jonathan Audy-Marchessault and Pavel Valentenko recorded the assists. Connecticut led 1-0 going into the first intermission.
Providence tied the game at one at the 7:49 mark of the second period. Tardif was skating free after a loose puck in the Whale end and was going to have a breakaway before Whale goaltender Chad Johnson beat him to the puck. Johnson went to clear the puck, but ended up putting it right on the stick of Tardif who shot the puck into an open net for his eighth goal of the season. The game went into the second intermission tied at one.
After a scoreless third period the game went into overtime. Providence went on a power play but were unable to score and during the power play, took a penalty, which led to a penalty shot for the Whale's Jordan Owens. He was unable to capitalize on the opportunity and the game went into a shootout. After the first two rounds went scoreless Arniel scored in round three and Hennessy scored in round four to seal the 2-1 victory for the P-Bruins.
Michael Hutchinson stopped 30 of 31 shots in regulation and all four shots in the shootout for the P-Bruins, while Johnson made 29 saves in regulation and two saves in the shootout for the Whale. The P-Bruins were 0-for-6 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
The P-Bruins return to The Dunk Sunday for Thundersticks Day at 4:05 p.m. against the Sound Tigers.
