Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins' four-game winning streak came to an end as they were defeated by the Norfolk Admirals, 5-2, on Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

Trailing 2-1 after the first period, the Penguins needed only 1:42 to erase the Admirals lead after Geoff Walker's centering pass clipped the skate of Bryan Lerg and trickled across the goal line. Lerg was given credit for his team-leading 11th goal of the season.

Norfolk would limit Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to just two shots through the rest of the second and go on to score three unanswered goals. Tyler Johnson put the Admirals back on top for good at 7:06 with a long wrister from the high slot that beat Brad Thiessen to the glove side and made the score 3-2.

That tally would bring in Scott Munroe off the bench to try and stem the tide. Munroe made some big saves early, but couldn't stop Cory Conacher on a wraparound attempt at 13:31 for his league-leading 18th goal of the year.

Michel Ouellette wrapped up the Admirals' second-period onslaught as he left alone on the left side of the net to tap in Carter Ashton's cross-crease feed with 19.6 seconds left until the intermission.

The Admirals came out flying to start the game and drew a penalty just 32 seconds into the first period. On the ensuing man-advantage, Matt Fornataro gave Norfolk the 1-0 lead at 53-second mark, tucking a puck around the skate of Thiessen.

Less than four minutes later, it was Ashton putting the Admirals up 2-0 as he redirected Radko Gudas' blueline shot into the top left corner of the net.

The Penguins were able to settle down and cut Norfolk's lead back to one at 10:41 when Dan Henningson's shot from the left wall hit Ben Street on the leg and bounced by Dustin Tokarski.

Thiessen returned to the net for the third period and took the loss with 10 saves on 13 shots to go to 11-7-2 on the season. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went 0-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins take the ice against the Albany Devils on Monday, December 19 at 7:05pm in their last game before the holiday break. For tickets and more information, call the Penguins at (570) 208-PENS or visit www.wbspenguins.com.
