Cougars Comeback for 10th Straight Win, 50th at Home
August 20, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill.- Only one team in franchise history had more win than the 2014 Kane County Cougars, as a five-run eighth inning handed the Cougars (38-20, 83-45) their 10th straight win for a 7-3 victory over the Burlington Bees (26-32, 64-63). The 2001 Cougars finished the regular season with 88 wins and later went on to win the Midwest League Championship. The Cougars also tied a franchise record with 50 home wins.
For the second straight day, the Cougars never led in the ballgame until the bottom of the eighth inning. Leading 3-2, Burlington's fourth pitcher of the day took the mound with two runners on and let up a game-tying RBI single to Cael Brockmeyer. The Bees nearly escaped the inning even at three, but a throwing error by the second baseman Kody Eaves handed the Cougars the advantage. Daniel Lockhart's ground ball to the shortstop looked to be a double play, but Eaves' toss to first went wild and Yasiel Balaguert scored for the go-ahead run. Carlos Penalver plated Lockhart with an RBI single and Jeffrey Baez, who nearly missed on a solo shot earlier in the game, went deep for a two-run blast and a 7-3 lead.
Cole Swanson (1-2) suffered the loss being responsible for the tying and winning runs.
The Cougars came back three times in the contest, as Baez scored on Mark Zagunis' RBI double in the third and Lockhart tied the game in the sixth with a single.
Jasvir Rakkar (3-0) stretched his streak of scoreless innings to 14 to pick up the win.
The Cougars now welcome in the Clinton LumberKings on Thursday to begin a three-game series. Jonathan Martinez (9-5, 3.47) will throw for the Cougars against Clinton's left-hander Blake Holovach (6-4, 3.87). For tickets call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com.
